PSP Vita in-depth review and opinions of the new specifications and features compared with its older generation the PSP-3000(PSP Brite)

Size and weight

The PS Vita is currently the largest between the psp versions. PS VIta has a width of 7.2 inches and a height of 4.4 inches while the PSP-3000 only has a width of 6.7 inches and a height of 2.9 inches. The Screen is also bigger and brighter. PS Vita boast a 5 inch OLED screen and the PSP-3000 only has 4.3 inch TFT screen. The exact weight of the PSP Vita is still not exactly known but reports are that it is lighter than the PSP-3000 which is 189 grams but the PS Vita is bulkier.

Controls and buttons

The PS VIta has 3 buttons unlike the PSP-3000 that has home/PS logo button, increase volume, decrease volume, sound button, display button and select start. The PSP Vita only has home/PS logo button on the left and select and start on the right. The buttons location has been changed to the left and the right unlike the old version of the PSP that has it below the screen. The L trigger and the R trigger is still on the same place which is on the upper most left and right portion of the PS Vita just like the old generation psp.The circle, square, triangle, cross button key is still on the right portion of the PSP so is the directional button which on the Right. The biggest difference you can see is that The PS Vita has two analog sticks on the left and the right unlike the old Psp like the psp slim and psp-3000 that has only one analog stick on the left. The analog sticks are also a little bit raised giving them move range and sensitivity than the old analog sticks of the PSP-3000 and the other old PSP.

I really like the added analog stick on the right because if you are playing games that need a seperate control for foot movement and head movement especailly on first person shooter games. The elevated analog sticks make it easier to use it unlike the old analog stick that is sometimes hard to use.

The PS Vita has two versions one with WiFi/GPS and a higher one with WiFi, GPS and 3G unlike the old PSP generations which only has WiFi.

PSP Games

The PS Vita has no UMD slots unlike the PSP-300 and the old PSP versions excluding PSP go. PSP Vita will have its own game media that looks similar to the old memory cards of the PSX and the PS2. PSP VITA can play old PSP games(backward compatibility) but old PSP generation like PSP-3000 cannot play PSP vita games.

Well it's really weird that sony will make another game media when there is still UMD games coming out. They are just making another media obsolete. Old PSP generation users will be left in the dust with new games. I just hope we can get a free download of a game if you have bought it before.

PS Vita only features

PS Vita has dual touch system. One is on the front with your screen. And the other is on the back of the PSP. PS Vita has multi-touch capability making it easier to play touch intensive games. PS Vita also have an accelorometer so motion games can be played on the PSP Vita.

I have seen on some video game trailers that the touch pad on the back and the touch screen on the front can be dependant and independent to one another. Some games like the new little big planet for the PSP vita uses both the front and the back touch pad/screens dependently. I think it's really nice that your hand will not always cover your screen if the game you are playing is touch intensive. But it might be a little bit awkward on how to play all the buttons at once and the touch screen too.

The PSP Vita also has two cameras which are located on the back and the front, and microphone on top.

Those microphones and cameras can be used for interactive games that may need them Can I hear nintendogs?

The PS Vita is the real answer for the DS its direct competitor. It adds casual gaming capabilities because it now has touch screen capability. The PSP Vita is priced as $249 without 3G and $299 with 3G on amazon

@Bob Richards I think amazon has a converter if you are in the action of buying it. The PSP phone is different with the PSP Vita but I think the PSP phone can play VITA games but i don't know for sure. Ill make an article about it though in a few hours. I also converted the $249 to euro and its 175 euro approximately.
